How to clean garden stones

While decorative aggregates are a great way to create a low-maintenance garden, they do need a little bit of looking after which is why you need to know how to clean garden stones.

First, how do you know when you should be cleaning garden stones?

Well, some areas are more susceptible than others – such as those close to trees and bushes.

You’re more likely to need to maintain them in the autumn, after leaves have fallen and weather conditions worsen, and in the spring when the climate improves.

Look out too for sprouting weeds, discolouration and staining.

You don’t need a lot of equipment to clean garden stones, just a few things should do.

They include:

  1. A stiff bristle brush or broom
  2. Pressure washer or garden hose
  3. Bucket
  4. Mild detergent, or stone cleaner
  5. Scourer/sponge

There’s no mystery to how to clean garden decorative stones, but preparation will make things easier.

First, remove any debris, such as loose dirt and leaves, by sweeping the surface of the stones and use your stiff brush to remove more stubborn particles.

You are now ready to find out how to clean stones in garden.

How to clean stones in the garden

The best way to clean garden stones is tomaintain them regularly with a quick brush and wash.

However, given we’re all time poor when it comes to gardening, the likelihood is that other things will take over and when the weather improves and we’re spending more time outside, cleaning decorative stones becomes a priority.

Cleaning gravel

So, how to wash garden stones? Well, a lot depends on size and situation.

You’ll probably notice that high-traffic areas such as footpaths will begin to look grimy after a while, and gravel in areas which don’t get much sunlight (or are close to a pond or water feature) may develop algae or moss.

To clean these, all you need is a high-pressure hose on a low setting.

This should be sufficient to remove the algae and any dirt.

Cleaning white and light-coloured stones

We’re always looking for the best way to clean stones in garden and the good news is that simple works.

Take white stones, which are a very popular choice because they give the garden a contemporary clean look.

If they lose their pristine attractive patina, you can use a high-pressure hose to clean them. It’s as easy as that.

But if you’re looking at how to clean decorative stones that have become dirty then, you need to use a bit of elbow grease and a solution of washing up liquid or white vinegar.

If that doesn’t work, you can place your stones in a wheelbarrow and cover them in a solution of 50ml of bleach to 20ml of water.

Leave them for around 24 hours and they should come up looking brand spanking new.

Large stones

So, that’s it for smaller stones but how do you clean decorative stones which are bigger?

If you have larger rocks in your garden, you’ll need to do some regular maintenance to ensure they remain looking great.

Use a mixture of water and washing up liquid, or vinegar, and a scrubbing brush and you should be able to get rid of algae and other debris which builds up over time.

Key to knowing how to clean decorative stones in garden is basically ensuring that the stones do not get too dirty in the first place.

Give your stones a brush every few weeks and a regular pressure wash and you’ll ensure they keep on looking fabulous.

And if you want to cut down on the maintenance further, then reach for a sealant.

There are a number of these on the market and thanks to advances in science they can provide effective protection for your decorative stones for up to 10 years.
